Day 1: Hanoi – Yen Bai – First Impressions of Northern Vietnam’s Rice Terraces

Our Vietnam Photo Tour begins with an early departure from Hanoi as we travel northwest towards the spectacular mountains and valleys of Yen Bai Province.
The journey itself offers a fascinating transition from the busy streets of Hanoi to the peaceful countryside of Northern Vietnam. As we leave the city behind, the landscape gradually changes into rolling hills, mountains, traditional villages, and increasingly dramatic rice terraces.
Upon arrival in our photography area, we will check in to our local accommodation and take some time to settle in before beginning our first photography session.
During the afternoon, we will explore the surrounding valleys and begin photographing the spectacular patterns and textures of the terraced rice fields. Depending on the season and conditions, we may encounter farmers working in the fields, local people travelling along the mountain paths, buffaloes, or other scenes of daily rural life.
As the light softens, we will position ourselves for our first golden-hour photography session, capturing the warm evening light falling across the terraces and surrounding mountains.
This first session is also an opportunity to become familiar with the landscape and discuss photographic possibilities for the coming days.

We begin the day before dawn and travel to one of our carefully selected photography locations for sunrise.
Early morning is often one of the most magical times for rice terrace photography in Vietnam. Depending on weather conditions, mist may drift through the valleys while the first rays of sunlight gradually illuminate the mountains and terraces.
We will spend the morning photographing the changing light and exploring different compositions, from wide panoramic scenes to more intimate details of the landscape.
After breakfast, we continue deeper into the Mu Cang Chai region, photographing rural life and the cultural landscape that makes this part of Northern Vietnam so unique.
Throughout the day, we will look for authentic moments involving local people and farmers as they go about their daily routines. Later in the day, we continue towards our next accommodation, surrounded by some of the most impressive mountain scenery in the area.

Today is dedicated to exploring deeper into the spectacular landscapes of Mu Cang Chai.
Rather than simply visiting the most obvious viewpoints, our Vietnam Photography Tour focuses on discovering a variety of locations and photographic possibilities, including quieter valleys, remote terraces, traditional villages, and lesser-visited areas where conditions allow.
We begin with an early-morning photography session, taking advantage of the soft light before continuing our exploration through the mountains.
Mu Cang Chai is home to several ethnic minority communities, including the H’mong people, whose culture and agricultural traditions have shaped much of this remarkable landscape. As we travel through the region, we will look for respectful and authentic opportunities to photograph local life and cultural activities.

After the photography session and breakfast, we begin our journey back towards Hanoi.
As we leave the mountains behind, we will have time to reflect on an unforgettable four days of photography in Northern Vietnam, returning to Hanoi with a collection of images capturing the landscapes, people, culture, and atmosphere of one of the most spectacular destinations featured on our Vietnam Photo Tours.
