Tho Ha – The rice paper making village

Tho Ha Village is an excellent destination for photography in Vietnam, offering photographers the chance to capture authentic village life, traditional crafts, and the timeless beauty of the Red River Delta. Located about one hour northeast of Hanoi along the Cau River, the village retains its traditional character, with an old communal house, temple, village gate, banyan trees, narrow lanes, and a small local market.

What makes Tho Ha especially fascinating for photographers is its long-standing tradition of making Banh Da Nem – Vietnamese rice paper used for spring rolls.

Making Rice Paper in Tho Ha Village

Rice paper production is a year-round traditional craft in Tho Ha. The process begins early in the morning, when rice is ground and mixed with water before being steamed into thin sheets. Local artisans then place the freshly made rice papers on bamboo drying racks, which can be seen throughout the village – above narrow alleys, in courtyards, and even across rooftops.

These bamboo racks, together with the artisans at work and the village’s old architecture, create some of the most photogenic scenes in northern Vietnam.

Photography Tour in Tho Ha Village

Tho Ha village photography tour

Our Tho Ha photography tour is designed for photographers and photography enthusiasts who want to experience an authentic traditional village while developing their photography skills.

We cross the Cau River by local ferry before exploring the village on foot. Along the narrow lanes, we make spontaneous visits to local homes and workshops to photograph the rice-paper-making process. We also explore techniques for photographing in challenging indoor light and capturing the atmosphere of traditional craft production.

As we continue through the village, there are opportunities to photograph artisans drying rice paper, traditional architecture, portraits, and everyday local life.

Our Tho Ha Photo Tour combines photography with cultural exploration, making it a wonderful addition to a Vietnam Photo Tour or a photography-focused trip from Hanoi.
