A tranquil River Life
Hue is known for its timelessly quaint beauty, a place where the past kings of Vietnam located their administration in. Hue is home to the famous Imperial city, the Citadel and the numerous king’s tombs that one can’t miss out when digging further into the culture and history of Vietnam. Hue is bisected by the poetic Perfume River with its crystal water that fed the city and inspired generations of artists.
Life in Hue unfolds at a gentle pace, some even call it slow. In a sense, that’s the way the locals choose to lead their life: calm, peaceful. And perhaps it somehow gets Hue away from modernization, from the invasion of real estate developers or brokers. Along the banks of the Perfume River, fishermen continue their age-old traditions, harvesting clams to prepare the delicious clam rice that every visitor must try. And when it comes to river life, what makes Hue strikingly photogenic is the scene of fishermen casting their nets from the traditional sampan boats, creating a perfect sceneto capture the essence of rural Vietnamese life.
The lantern tradition
In Vietnamese, the word for “lantern” is “Hoa Dang”, which translates to “Flower of Light”. Lantern has been in broad use for thousands of years for firstly, lighting. Then came the tradition of using lanterns for ceremonies in quest for calmness, peace and happiness. In Hue, the enchanting tradition of lighting and floating lanterns on water has its roots in Buddhism, symbolizing the journey toward Enlightenment. As the lanterns illuminate a part of the river in blue hour, they carry the heartfelt wishes of the people.
